Photo by halans What did you do this weekend? Ozan, Rob, (and Scott from home!), Jezza, and I spent our weekend hacking at the Open Australia Hackfest - “Mashup Australia” edition. We’ll be making the finishing touches over the next week ready to enter into the Government 2.0 Taskforce Mashup Australia competition. The aim of the competition is to show what we can do with government data, whether it’s a visualisation, and application, or improving data sets so that they are in a better format for others to reuse. We want more openness and transparency government, open data is a nice step in that direction.

Researchers seek UK 'soundscapes' (BBC tech)

A project has launched to capture the sounds of UK locations, mapping them to create “soundscapes” that can be visited by users of the project’s site.

Participants are asked to record 5 - 10 second intervals of sound using their mobile phones, describing where and why they took the recording.

Web Directions & Typographic Structure

Mark Boulton’s write up on his Web Directions South (#wds09) presentation on Typographic Structure. One of the best things I got out of his talk was his Typographic Design diagram, which as he understands it involves 9 elements: Language, Typesetting, Grid, Hierarchy, Font, Rhythm, Layout, Colour, and Content.
