What did you do this weekend? Ozan, Rob, (and Scott from home!), Jezza, and I spent our weekend hacking at the Open Australia Hackfest - “Mashup Australia” edition. We’ll be making the finishing touches over the next week ready to enter into the Government 2.0 Taskforce Mashup Australia competition.

The aim of the competition is to show what we can do with government data, whether it’s a visualisation, and application, or improving data sets so that they are in a better format for others to reuse.

We want more openness and transparency government, open data is a nice step in that direction.

Researchers seek UK 'soundscapes' (BBC tech):

A project has launched to capture the sounds of UK locations, mapping them to create “soundscapes” that can be visited by users of the project’s site.

Participants are asked to record 5 - 10 second intervals of sound using their mobile phones, describing where and why they took the recording.

Mark Boulton’s write up on his Web Directions South (#wds09) presentation on Typographic Structure. One of the best things I got out of his talk was his Typographic Design diagram, which as he understands it involves 9 elements: Language, Typesetting, Grid, Hierarchy, Font, Rhythm, Layout, Colour, and Content.

I got my lemon tree! I’ve been wanting to get one for a few weeks, ever since the idea popped into my head whilst thinking about the fact that we have 2 north facing balconies in our apartment and that really they should be put to better use. On Saturday I had a bit of a panic when a green bug appeared on my tree, thanks to some googling and tweets, too my horror I discovered it’s something called a stink bug!

…Well the stink bug has since been vacated from the tree, and yesterday whilst doing a “bug check” I found that the first flower had opened up and I got a bit excited and took a few photos :)

Oyster Card: 10 Million + RFID Chips in London

The Oyster card is an RFID smart card used for electronic ticketing on London public transport services, notably the London Underground and buses.

The Oyster card has many potential Internet applications, however enterprising British geeks have been exploring less serious applications for the Oyster Card over the past few years. One was an interactive exhibition that translated a user’s unique Oyster card id into a unique snowflake, which was then displayed on Tinker.it’s office window for passers-by to play with.

Taking Governments to 2.0

Today I discovered I was a mentioned in a ZDNet Patch Monday podcast, so I had a listen. An interesting discussion. Many topics they talked about have frequented conversations I’ve had recently with people working in and with Government, and those outside of governemnt who want to evoke change. Even at lunch today I was discussing with @b3rn from Mosman Council, how long would it take for meaningful change to happen.

With issues over privacy and copyright it’s hard sometimes to see through the red tape to Government 2.0. Often there is a lot of buzz and excitement around events, like the public spheres, but whilst creating excitement and awareness around gov 2.0 is a start, is there more we can do to make stuff happen?

I personally think that the actions of individuals can make change from within organisations - just by doing it, by building cool stuff. I also know that requires a lot of will and determination and there is only so much one person can do. So yes, this change to Government 2.0 needs to come from top down as well, and from all spheres of governemnt. After all, the people creating all that useful data won’t have the inclination to provide it in a meaningful, accessible form if their manager doesn’t make them, or give them time to do it. Not everyone is spurred on by why it’s important, by what’s right. But the actions of individuals can evoke change in organisations because sometimes people will be inspired just by seeing it demonstrated.

Through the Local Government Web Network I hope we can give some people the skills and knowledge to do things a better way, whether that’s raising awareness or building some cool stuff for Local Government.

The podcasters mentioned my 3 minute Webjam presentation where I talked about how I (try to) build cool stuff in local government, and how location aware devices could allow us to do something “useful” with public data. I still feel we are a long way off from my dream of Iron Man, but I think now there’s a few more people with that same dream.
